HISTORICAL ITEM: In the past, Jan 6 was a traditional family holiday with celebrations and gift-giving similar to our own December Christmas. While our kids hung stockings for Santa, Mexican youngsters placed their shoes on the doorstep in anticipation of gifts from the 3 Kings. Today most families here celebrate on the 25th but some continue to have a family gathering on January 6, serving cake in which a plastic doll is hidden. The family member finding the doll in their serving of cake must host the whole gathering for a full course February dinner. |

Dia de la Constitucion Adopted in 1917 and still in effect today, Mexico's constitution was designed to further social and human rights reforms. It guarantees protection by government for all Mexicans without distinction of race, creed, social or political condition. Formulated under the presidency of Venustiano Carranza, one of the greatest achievements of the constitution is the redistribution of farmlands, forming the Ejido system or coop which has brought opportunity to the common man of Mexico. At 17 he managed to invent Mexico's first television camera using parts and pieces from old radios. Continuing an interest in TV throughout his life, Camarena invented a way to mass produce TV sets in Mexico and went on to propose the telesecundaria network which today is bringing educational programs to 800,000 high school students across Mexico. Natalicio Juarez. President's Day (banks and utilities closed) - workers are paid triple time
Born in 1806 in Oaxaco, Benito Juarez was a self-educated man through most of his pre-teen years. In this small town the only road to education for male or female child was to find work in private homes where their labor would be exchanged for tutoring. From this humble Indian background rose a man elected President of Mexico at the age of 54. Under his guidance the country began building schools and railroads and the people were granted free speech and free press. |

| *November 20 HISTORICAL ITEM: In early years a problem existed as to the ownership of a disputed area of land known as Chamizal in El Paso, Texas....or in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The international boundary determined by the Rio Grande, ownership shifted with the whimsical meanderings of the river. Once a windswept spot housing one or two small ranches, by 1963 the area comprised several bustling blocks of downtown El Paso....or Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. On December 20, 1963 the matter was settled with the decision to construct a 4.3 mile concrete channel to regulate the water's flow. Today a 55 acre Memorial Park at Chamizal celebraties the positive possibilities of cooperation among countries sharing a mutual boundary
